The PPI Reclaim Process

With so much talk about mis-sold PPI’s and the opportunity to claim money back, it is easy to see why so many people are keen to look into the PPI reclaim process. In the current economic climate, being able to get your hands on any additional money is going to be seen as a good thing. Of course, many people also have a great mistrust in the banks at the moment which means that there are a lot of people that are keen to reclaim for money that they are due thanks to errors in the PPI process.

PPI is able to provide cover for loans or other credit repayments and many people have taken them out for all manner of situations. It was found that a great number of these policies were sold wrongly to people and there is the opportunity for a lot of people to claim a refund on these PPIs.

If you have been mis-sold a PPI, you may have paid or still be in the process of paying for the policy. This policy may be one that you do not need or even be able to pay back on but there is a chance that you can claim money back on an incorrectly sold PPI and there a simple number of steps to look out for.

Look to see if you have a policy

If you think that you have been mis-sold PPI, the first step you should take is to look out for any documents you have relating to the PPI. If you are lucky, you may find the document and it may include the cost of the PPI on your statement. While it may be listed as PPI, it could be listed as any of the following names:

  • Loan protection
  • Credit insurance
  • Loan repayment insurance
  • ASU insurance
  • Account cover
  • Payment cover

If you find these listed on your statement, you will have received PPI in your time. If you are still unsure over whether you have got PPI, you should enquire at the bank or firm that sold you the loan, mortgage, credit card or product.

Look to see if the policy was mis-sold

  • There are many different reasons why a PPI policy may have been mis-sold to you, including:
  • There was pressure placed on you to take out the PPI policy
  • There was no mention made of the fact that PPI is optional
  • Even though PPI was not suitable for you, you were advised to take it
  • You believed that PPI was a condition and that taking it would improve your chances of being accepted for credit
  • Exclusions were not explained to you
  • The PPI element was added without your knowledge
  • The issue of interest for the cost of PPI if added to your loan was not explained
  • PPI cover ending before the loan or credit was repaid was not explained in full

Carry out the claim

This is where some people will take different paths in their attempts to reclaim money lost through PPI. It should be noted that it is possible to make the claim yourself without any middle men. If you feel confident about this or your feel as though you have the time and effort to follow the claim through yourself, there is nothing to prevent you from doing so.

However, it would be fair to say that many people feel more confident in leaving the claiming process to people who have experience in this field. There is no right or wrong way to go about making the PPI claim; it all depends on the individual. If you do decide to use a claim handler or claim management company to make the claim on your behalf, be sure to check out the terms and conditions.

Some of these firms may ask for a fee upfront, some may operate on a no win, no fee basis but then take more of your money if you get money back. These are legitimate costs and many people are happy to give up an amount of money to have a professional take care of it for them.

If you do decide to use a claim handler you should carefully consider whether to pay an upfront fee before your complaint is submitted, as there is no guarantee it will be successful and you could be left out of pocket.

This should be all the steps you need to claim back on your PPI but if this fails to get you the outcome you desire, you can still contact the lender or the ombudsman for additional support.
